Golf Cart Ordinance

County leaders began to notice the popularity of Golf Carts with several recreational opportunities county wide, especially around the local golf courses and amenities at Lake Norman. In addition, the City of Lincolnton has seen over 90 registered within their corporate limits in the center of the County.

In the Fall of 2018, the Board of County Commissioners took the initiative to research and develop an ordinance for the county that provides citizens and the general public the freedom to utilize golf carts on certain roads within the County as allowed by G.S. 153A-245. Primarily, these are roads with speed limits of 35 miles per hour. Using the North Carolina Department of Transportation's (NCDOT) template for a golf cart ordinance, the county drafted and adopted regulations pertaining to the specific permitted uses of these types of vehicles.
If used properly, Golf Carts are an effective mode of transportation and a good way to travel short distances within the County while also working to achieve environmental goals such as better air quality.
The informative map below will allow you to navigate the county to see the roads where carts are allowed and specifically where they are not allowed. If the speed limit of a road or section of road is over 35 miles per hour, Golf Cars are not allowed, therefore these roads are not symbolized.
