and the County Sheriff's Office: Responds and pursues tips received
through the hotline.
The Crime Stoppers Board of Directors: The
volunteer Board of Directors conducts fund raising events and makes
rewards payments.

ABOUT CRIME STOPPERS
The Crime Stoppers program is a vital component of the
fight against crime. No matter how well organized, equipped or energetic a
law enforcement agency may be, it cannot function effectively without the
cooperation and involvement of the community. Crime Stoppers has proven
itself to be one of the foremost community involvement programs in the
world. It has solved over half million felony cases and recovered over
three billion dollars in property and narcotics around the globe.
There are currently 93 Crime Stopper programs in the state
of North Carolina. The Crime Stoppers concept was first developed in 1976
in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lincoln County’s Crime Stoppers program is part
of a statewide association of Crime Stoppers programs, all working together
to reduce crime and improve the quality of life within their communities.
The Crime Stoppers concept however, has a critical difference from other
programs that involve the community. Crime Stoppers programs through its
police coordinators are an investigative body working with citizens as one
crime fighting unit.
There are people in the community who have information
which could solve crimes, but either because of fear or apathy do not come
forward with what they know. Crime Stoppers gives them an alternative to
calling 911, working on the assumption that in some cases people who might
not otherwise become involved would do so if they felt safe and/or were
motivated.
