Mr. Lem: The Life and Art of Lemuel Moore Nolen

Friday, June 15

Please be our guest at the opening of the exhibition Mr. Lem: The Life and Art of Lemuel Moore Nolen on Friday night, June 15, 2012 at the Lincoln Cultural Center in historic downtown Lincolnton. The exhibition, opening, and accompanying exhibition catalog are part of a collaborative effort between the Crouse Community History and Photo Project and Lincoln County Historical Association, and includes over sixty paintings from Lincoln County's most-remembered and time-honored folk artist. Lem Nolen is known to some as North Carolina's first licensed male beautician and to many as a celebrated folk artist. But to the people of Crouse, the man known as "Mr. Lem" was so much more. He began his working life in a factory and ended it sitting under an oak tree with a paint brush in his hand. The story of his life is everything that happened in between.

The goal of this project is to spotlight the amazing work of Mr. Lem, and to honor all of the memories that he created and shared with the people of Crouse.

We invite you to attend so that you can share your memories of Mr. Lem, and see the largest collection of his work ever exhibited in Lincoln County.

The Crouse Community History and Photo Project and the Lincoln County Historical Association are excited about and so thankful for the participation in and support of this project by the Crouse community, friends and family of Lem Nolen, and the supporters of the art and history community in Lincoln County.  This exhibition and accompanying catalog are the first in a series between the Crouse Community History and Photo Project and the LCHA covering the people and places of Crouse.

Your attendance at the exhibition opening on Friday night, June 15, 2012 at the Lincoln Cultural Center will contribute to both of these organizations' missions of collecting, preserving, and presenting the rich history and heritage of Lincoln County, and will expand your knowledge of the artistic foundation that individuals such as Lem Nolen established in Lincoln County.
